A soli 1000 km dal Polo Nord sorge la cittadina mineraria di Logyearbyean, fondata agli inizi del ‘900 da John Munroe Longyean, proprietario di alcune miniere di carbone nei dintorni. Situata sulle isole Svalbard, sotto la sovranità norvegese, la cittadina ospita poco più di 2000 abitanti ed è attualmente un importante centro turistico e universitario mentre l’attività mineraria occupa meno importanza. Il clima è artico anche se temperato dalla corrente del Golfo con temperature medi che oscillano tra i 4 ei 6 gradi in estate mentre la media invernale è tra i -12 e i -16 gradi. Il sole di mezzanotte è osservabile da aprile a agosto mentre in inverno il sole non sorge all’orizzonte da fine ottobre ai primi di marzo. La neve copre la cittadina da settembre a maggio. Longyearbyean non è sicuramente una città per vecchi (non ci sono abitanti con più di 66 anni) ed ha un tasso di ricambio annuo della popolazione molto alto (circa il 20% con una media di permanenza di 6 anni). Solo metà della popolazione possiede un auto mentre, per ovvie ragioni, sono preferite le motoslitte. La cittadina è servita dallo Svalbard Airport che, assieme al porto, la connette al resto del mondo.

Only 1000 km from the North Pole is the mining town of Logyearbyean, founded in the early '900 by John Munroe Longyean, owner of several coal mines in the area. Located on Svalbard, under Norwegian sovereignty, the town has 2,000 inhabitants and is currently a major tourist center and university while mining occupies less importance. The climate is arctic although tempered by the Gulf Stream with average temperatures ranging between 4 and 6 degrees in the summer and the winter average is between -12 and -16 degrees. The midnight sun is visible from April to August, while in winter the sun never rises on the horizon from late October to early March. The snow covers the city from September to May. Longyearbyean is definitely not a city for old (there are not people with more than 66 years) and has an annual turnover rate of the population very high (about 20% with an average stay of six years). Only half of the population owns a car while, for obvious reasons, are preferred snowmobiles. The town is served by the Svalbard Airport which, together with the port, connects to the rest of the world.
